Hong Kong Film Festival UK 2026

I am fine, thank you. documents the stories of Hongkongers who migrated to the UK after 2019, as each gradually settled into a new life in the country while finding their own way to connect with memories of the homeland.

How are you? A simple greeting can often be the most difficult question to answer — if you take it seriously enough, and if the person asking cares enough to learn the details. For many Hongkongers, it is easiest to spare the details: the complicated experience and feelings of leaving Hong Kong for some years and settling in a country where the language, culture and climate are vastly different from home, and brush it off with a generic ESL textbook-like answer. But how are they, really?

This documentary originated from the ‘We Are Hongkongers’ research project, funded by the British Academy/Wolfson Fellowship. Eleven Hongkongers who have moved to the UK since 2019 participated in sharing their experiences and feelings in multiple filmed visits. This film features a few of these participants’ stories.

Followed by a panel discussion with co-director Sui-Ting Kong, Tsang Chi-ho of nowhere UK 飛地英國, and Mona Jamil, community-oriented organiser and civic engagement lead at the Migration Museum.

English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH). British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation provided for post-screening discussion.

Content warning: This work contains footage of police violence at protest scenes and strong language which some individuals may find distressing.
