This film screening considers the concept of diasporic home-making through an alternative artistic medium to amplify the different ways that people are affected by migration in the present geo-political context. After a brief introduction the screening commences with Pre-Image (Blind As The Mother Tongue), 2017, where artist Hiwa K narrates and retraces a journey he undertook on foot as a child from Turkey to Rome. Chibayish, 2023, by Alia Farid explores the lives of a family in the marshlands of southern Iraq as their region is overtaken by oil infrastructure and industrial waste; the film emphasises identity, the right to remain in your homeland and resilience. Jonathas de Andrade’s Sorelle Senza Nome (Nameless Sisters), 2025, focuses on a community of nuns who were forced to flee the military dictatorship in Brazil in the 1960s. Together they have created a new home and continued their support of those who are oppressed. This screening aims to leave viewers with deeper empathy for the migratory experience, as well as a sense of hope of what can be achieved when communities come together to support one another.
With brief introductions by Bianca Stoppani (Fondazione In Between Art Film), Steven Cairns (Institute of Contemporary Arts, London), Giulia Civardi, and the Courtauld’s MA Curating Cohort.
