Chuck (Patton Oswalt) loves his 20-something son Franklin (James Morosini). But following his parents’ separation, a bristling, emotionally fragile Franklin cuts off unreliable Chuck entirely. Rejected and dejected, Chuck invents a fake Facebook account using the image of wholesome local waiter Becky (Claudia Sulewski) and gradually creates the perfect partner as a way back into Franklin’s life. But when Franklin falls for Chuck/Becky, dad has to upgrade his son’s virtual saviour into providing more physical offline needs.
Writer-director-star Morosini cleverly ups the cringe factor by staging social media interactions as in-person encounters, including a jaw-dropping ‘sexting’ set-piece. Meanwhile, Oswalt and a cracking cast plunge fearlessly into the heartfelt emotional currents swirling beneath this dark comedy’s stupendously awkward premise. Oedipus wrecks, and then some.
