In Focus: Whit Stillman
Institute of Contemporary Arts
2-4 January 2025

A special programme of three films celebrating the work of American filmmaker Whit Stillman.

Over the course of the 1990s, writer-director Whit Stillman made a trilogy of films centred upon the sardonic romanticism of young Americans at home and abroad. Loosely referred to as his “doomed bourgeois in love” trilogy, these three films are at once witty and effervescent comedies and melancholic portraits of era-defining social change.

Programme

Thursday 2 January, 6.30pm
Metropolitan
Whit Stillman's debut feature is a deftly comedic chronicle of a young man’s romantic misadventures in New York City’s debutante society, and one of the great independent films of the 1990s.

Friday 3 January, 6.30pm
Barcelona on 35mm
Whit Stillman's follow-up to his debut feature Metropolitan is another delightfully loquacious comedy of manners, this time centred upon two mismatched American cousins staying in Barcelona.

Saturday 4 January, 6pm
The Last Days of Disco on 35mm + Q&A with Whit Stillman
Whit Stillman’s dryly comic drama about a group of young professionals experiencing life and love while frequenting a Studio 54-esque disco in Manhattan in the early 80s. Followed by an in-person Q&A with Whit Stillman.
