In Front of Your Face, dir. Hong Sang-soo, South Korea 2021, 85 min.,Korean with English subtitles, 12A

This luminous, poignant and typically exploratory drama is the latest from hugely acclaimed Korean director Hong Sang-soo, the winner of three Silver Bear awards at the last three Berlin International Film Festivals – Best Director for The Woman Who Ran, Best Screenplay for Introduction and the Grand Jury Prize for The Novelist’s Film.

Sangok (Lee Hye-young), a former actress now in middle age, returns to Seoul after spending several years abroad. She stays with her estranged sister Jeongok (Yunhee Cho), sleeping late and often dining out – but it soon becomes clear that Sangok is keeping plenty to herself. Might her meetings with director Jaewon (Kwon Haehyo) herald her return to the screen? One of Hong’s most accessible films is also a love letter to his hometown – a personal, melancholic and sometimes very funny exploration of distance and closeness set against the shifting skyline of Seoul.
