UK PREMIERE Isabella + Introduction
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Two women cross a stream surrounded by lush grass
Isabella, dir. Matías Piñeiro, Argentina / France  2020, 80 min., Spanish with English subtitles

In his sixth feature, Matías Piñeiro crafts a hypnotic tale of artistic awakening as two women compete for the role of Isabella in a local production of William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure.

Building upon the structural experimentation of his previous work, Piñeiro embraces a radical atemporality to craft an elegant labyrinth of moments past and present. With its plays within plays and films within films, Piñeiro’s latest feature is a mesmerising mise-en-abyme enveloped in swathes of colour and imbued with an atmosphere of palpable melancholy. Featuring exceptional performances from Piñeiro regulars María Villar and Agustina Muñoz, Isabella is a profound and intriguing exploration of the inevitable battle between ambition and doubt.

Isabella will be preceded by a screening of Lois Patiño and Matías Piñeiro’s short film Sycorax. The final chapter in Piñeiro’s Las Shakesperiadas project, Sycorax is an elusive and free-form reworking of Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

This screening will feature an introduction from season curator Daniel Turner.
Sycorax is presented with the support of Bando à Parte and Filmika Galaika.
