Josee, the Tiger & the Fish
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Josee, The Tiger and the Fish, dir. Kotaro Tamura, Japan 2020, 99 min., Japanese with English subtitles, 12A

Tsuneo is a diving-obsessed marine biology student, eager to travel to Mexico for an underwater adventure but without the money to make it happen, when he sees and saves Kumiko, a paraplegic artist, from barrelling downhill in her wheelchair. Eager to make money to fund his travels, Tsuneo accepts an invitation from Kumiko’s overbearing grandmother to be the young woman’s carer – and almost in an instant, their lives change in ways that neither could ever have imagined.

Based on a short story by Seiko Tanabe, Kotaro Tamura’s first animated feature is a luscious, almost dreamlike fable – an unexpected, rocky-roaded romance between two people brought together by fate but ultimately kept together by love
