Two men are close to one another in a car, one looks happily at the other. The other man's eyes are low, he doesn't look happy. It is night time.
Lan Yu, dir. Stanley Kwan, Hong Kong, China 2001, 87 min., Cantonese with English subtitles. 15

Filmed in secret, this tender romance by Stanley Kwan combines the conventions of classic melodrama with a radically frank depiction of queer intimacy as it traces, over the course of years, the relationship between a wealthy businessman (Hu Jun) and a young student (Liu Ye).

A tragic romance based on a novel anonymously published on the internet, Lan Yu premiered at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival and proceeded to take top honours at the Hong Kong Film Awards and Taiwan Golden Horse Awards.
