Animation: Slippery Border
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Doom Cruise, dir. Hannah Stragholz, Simon Steinhorst, Germany 2021, 17’

A sensual, sinuous selection of animation from across the world, loosely drawn together through themes of death, incarceration, transcendence and fantasy worlds from another plane of existence. A cruise ship heading to oblivion is an unlikely location for a bird funeral. A nameless something lurks in the shadows of a night-time garden, a new life emerges into a gooey and strange world, and a lover’s jealous quarrel descends into Shakespearean tragedy.

The beauty of animated images is that they aren’t bound by earthly possibility, and these shorts slip around, fold in and out of themselves, over prison walls, across time, through loss and rebirth. Enjoy this programme of stories that push the boundaries of the form and gesture towards life’s biggest mysteries.
