T A P E Presents: Miryam Charles + Q&A
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Vers les colonies, dir. Miryam Charles, Canada 2016, 5 min.

Following the theatrical release of Miryam Charles’ feature debut and very personal story Cette Maison we revisit Charles’ work and short films. Too powerful and certain to be simply called experimental the shorts of the Haitian-Quebecer filmmaker unravel, and to an extent, unleash various stories, while the themes are all different Charles’ harrowing approach and assured storytelling on dreamy 16mm remains the constant throughout. Like a siren singing in the distance Charles’ films are alluring, haunting and comforting all in one.

An extended conversation will take place after the screening. We are pleased to co-present this retrospective with Twelve30collective, whose co-founder Jonathan Ali will be in conversation with Miryam Charles to discuss her process, journey and themes.
