Before Kyrgios, Djokovic and the other bad boys of 21st-century tennis, there was John McEnroe – world number one for four straight years, winner of a record 156 career titles, and an unpredictably explosive figure both on and off the court. Barney Douglas (The Edge) charts the spectacular rise, fall and afterlife of a genuine legend of the sport.
Douglas sets his film across one night in New York, McEnroe’s home town, as the sixtysomething player-turned-commentator looks back on the triumphs and controversies that defined his career. Featuring contributions from fellow players such as Billie Jean King and Björn Borg, as well as family and friends including Keith Richards, McEnroe paints an intimate portrait of a man who, 43 years on from his first Grand Slam title, remains a compelling presence.
