The ICA welcomes you back to Mondays for Members, our exclusive members-only events series.
Ahead of Scenario(s), our unique exhibition of Jean-Luc Godard's creative notebooks, we are excited to present a rare screening of Godard's 1983 film Prénom Carmen.
“If I love you, that’s the end of you”
Inspired in equal measure by Georges Bizet’s opera and Otto Preminger’s contemporary reimagining Carmen Jones (1954), from which the quote above is taken, Jean-Luc Godard's Prénom Carmen is a visually astounding meditation on doomed romanticism and artistic creation.
Centred upon the titular Carmen X (Maruschka Detmers) who plots to rob a bank to fund a film, Carmen’s uncle, a burnt-out filmmaker played by Godard himself, and a string quartet rehearsing Beethoven, Godard's Golden-Lion winning film is both a return to the lovers-on-the-run genre and a melancholic and disillusioned reconfiguration of it.
The screening will be introduced by ICA Film Programmer Daniel Turner, and will be followed by a free drinks reception.
