ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
This Open Call is now closed.
The ICA and Dr. Martens have come together to award seven Image Behaviour Production Grants worth a total of £60,000. These seven grants, six of £5,000 and one of £30,000, will support UK-based emerging artists to make new work for inclusion in Image Behaviour 2021, the ICA’s annual convening dedicated to experiments in artists’ moving image.
We are currently inviting proposals from UK-based emerging artists and collaborators who are looking to make their first significant presentation in a UK institution and who feel that they would benefit from expert mentoring and production support. You must be aged 16 or over, and you don’t need any formal training to apply.
Your proposal
Your proposal could be for an event-based installation, a single- and/or multi-channel projection, a performance, an online and/or streamable work, another moving image-based format or any combination of these formats – but it must have moving image at its core. It may be worth referring to the Image Behaviour 2019 programme for guidance and/or inspiration.
We are interested in proposals that experiment, that innovate and that are both conceptually and aesthetically ambitious. Image Behaviour 2021 will also have a strong online presence, and we are open to receiving proposals for online-only works.
Your application
Please include a detailed outline of your proposed project and a provisional budget of £5,000 (the value of a standard Image Behaviour Production Grant), which should include an artist’s fee of £500. You can present your budget using our budget template, which you can download from the application portal.
One artist will be invited to further develop their proposal with an Image Behaviour Production Grant of £30,000. You can opt in to be considered for this larger production grant as part of the application process. If you do so, you must include a second project outline that details your ambitions for your work if you were to receive this larger grant – but please note that you don’t need to develop a detailed budget for this second proposal until the shortlisting stage.
All live works will be presented in the ICA Theatre. If your proposal contains a live component, please ensure that it is consistent with the dimensions of the room, which are detailed on a downloadable floorplan. All web-based work must be accessible from a commonly available web browser.
Deadline
Please submit your proposal through the Image Behaviour Open Call portal by 6pm on Tuesday 30 March 2021. Following the closing date, the jury will invite a shortlist of artists to discuss their proposals in more detail, before selecting those artists who will receive the ICA x Dr. Martens Image Behaviour Production Grants and create new work for Image Behaviour 2021.
