Denis Ménochet stars as a bellicose film director who finds himself smitten by a handsome young acting hopeful in this subversive remake of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant by François Ozon (Summer of 85, By the Grace of God, Frantz) – which arrives 22 years after Ozon made his name with his adaptation of another Fassbinder work, Water Drops on Burning Rocks.
Peter von Kant (Ménochet, channelling Fassbinder himself) lives with his assistant Karl (Stefan Crepon), though this isn’t an especially happy household – Peter is a belligerent, faintly unpleasant man who takes joy in mistreating his pliant subordinate. When his actress friend Sidonie (Isabel Adjani) introduces Peter to handsome young Amir (Khalil Ben Gharbia), 20-odd years his junior, the smitten filmmaker promises to help make him a star – but have they both bitten off more than they can chew?
