A resolute drifter in 1950s Paris turns to common thievery in Robert Bresson’s peerless tale of crime, punishment and, perhaps, redemption.
Michel (Martin LaSalle) spends his days learning the art of pickpocketing – and then targeting unsuspecting Parisians who pass him on the street. Arrested and then released, Michel begins to reflect on the morality of crime, spouting vague theories about exceptional individuals being above the law. Lost in another world, he rejects his friends in favour of a life of crime – and the only way he can find a place for himself in society is by engineering a head-on collision with it. LaSalle excels in his first ever acting role, providing a suitably unstable moral centre for one of Bresson’s finest films.
