PREVIEW Neptune Frost + Q&A
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A hacker sits in front of a wall of blue TVs, cabling and motherboards in a mess surrounding them
Neptune Frost, dir. Anisia Uzeyman & Saul Williams, Rwanda / USA 2021, 105 min., Kinyarwanda / Kirundi / Swahili / French / English with English subtitles, 15

Incomparable musician-writer Saul Williams and artist-cinematographer Anisia Uzeyman join us for this special presentation of their Afrofuturist fantasia – a thrilling sci-fi punk musical that lists Ezra Miller, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Kara Walker among a who’s-who of producers.

From their camp in an otherworldly e-waste dump above Burundi, a group of renegade miners form an anti-colonialist hacker collective – and plot to take over from the authoritarian regime that exploits both the nation’s resources and its people. As they formulate their plans, a connection fires between miner Matalusa (Kaya Free) and intersex runaway Neptune (Cheryl Isheja and Elvis Ngabo) – which in turn sparks glitches within the greater divine circuitry. Dazzlingly imaginative and ceaselessly invigorating, this is a remarkable feature from one of contemporary culture’s most dazzling talents.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Saul Williams and Anisia Uzeyman, hosted by Ephraim Webber.
