Two outcasts find unexpected peace together in Li Ruijun’s deeply moving portrait of an arranged marriage in rural China – an unexpected arthouse hit until it was apparently banned by the Chinese government earlier this year.
Ma (Wu Renlin) is the last single brother in his family, while ailing Guiying (Hai Qing) is long past what her rural Chinese society regards as the marrying age. The pair are forced into a marriage arranged by their families, who have little hope of seeing it succeed. But in the face of unending adversity, shuffled from house to demolished house in search of a permanent home, the dirt-poor couple find a way to live, love and thrive together. Two compelling central performances help Li to shape this heartbreaking story of eternal love against the odds.
