The second episode of Rivette’s planned but unfinished tetralogy “Les Filles de feu” (which he later renamed Scènes de la vie parallèle and revisited decades later with Histoire de Marie et Julien), draws inspiration from the 40-day Carnival period extending from the last new moon of winter to the first full moon of spring, when goddesses are permitted commerce with mortals.
