Between the making of La Religieuse and L'amour fou, Rivette directed a three part documentary on filmmaker Jean Renoir as a part of the seminal series Cinéastes de Notre Temps. Over the course of several weeks Rivette would spend his days discussing, dining, and watching Renoir's films with the great filmmaker, and the experience would prove profoundly impactful on the direction of Rivette's subsequent work.
