Rurangi, dir. Max Currie, New Zealand 2020, 88 min., English, 15

A young trans man returns to a community he fears may not understand him in Max Currie’s critically acclaimed feature – a powerful and authentically told story of identity, acceptance, hope and home.

Caz (Elz Davis) fled his rural home town as a teenager, finding comfort and consolation among the LGBTQ+ community in Auckland. After some 10 years away, a decade during which he’s had no contact with his family, Caz decides to head back home to rebuild his lost relationships with his friends and father (Kirk Torrance) – a process that proves every bit as difficult as he feared. With all trans roles played by trans actors, an excellent cast brings Cole Meyers and Oliver Page’s screenplay to life in heartfelt and heartwarming fashion.
