Agnieszka Woszczyńska’s sparse, enigmatic debut feature is a dark, unflinching character study – a potent exploration of class, guilt and the power of denial.
Adam (Dobromir Dymecki) and Anna (Agnieszka Żulewska), a bourgeois couple from Poland, arrive at their holiday villa on an Italian island only to discover that the swimming pool is empty. The migrant worker sent to fix it falls victim to a deadly poolside accident, setting off a disturbing chain of events that shake the moral foundations of this seemingly perfect couple. Winner of the FIPRESCI award at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Woszczyńska’s first feature heralds the arrival of a new talent well worth following – and benefits from two outstanding performances from her two leads.
