Spencer, dir. Pablo Larraín, UK / USA / Germany / Chile 2021, 111 min., English, 12A

Princess Diana and Prince Charles have been married for a decade as Christmas 1991 approaches. But as Diana arrives at Sandringham for the holidays, the marriage has long since grown cold amid rumours of affairs, separation, perhaps even divorce.

Five years on from his biopic of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Chilean director Pablo Larraín (Ema, Jackie) conjures ‘a fable from a true tragedy’ by imagining three days in the failing marriage of Charles and Diana. With a sharp script by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders), Spencer is an acting showcase for the likes of Sally Hawkins, Timothy Spall, Stella Gonet – and, as the troubled couple, Jack Farthing and Kristen Stewart.
