Stranger in Paradise, dir. Guido Hendrikx, The Netherlands 2016, 73 min., English, Bambara and French with English subtitles

In a Sicilian classroom, a group of recently arrived refugees takes lessons from an unpredictable teacher (Valentijn Dhaenens) who both embraces their survival and disdains their very existence. One moment, his lessons seem designed to help them find their way in these strange new surroundings. The next, though, he tells them that they’ll never find work, comfort or perhaps even a home. Operating at the intersection of documentary and fiction, Guido Hendrikx’s film interrogates the power dynamic between Europe and the refugees it welcomes with not altogether open arms. This unflinching film essay explores the mechanisms with which Europe tackles refugees’ desire for happiness – and brutally considers whether they might ever find it.
