Kentucker Audley and Albert Birney’s charmingly off-the-wall fantasy blends sci-fi satire with romantic comedy as it imagines a future where a government can see our dreams – and tax us for having them.
2035, somewhere in the middle of America. Mild-mannered government agent James Preble (Audley) travels to a remote farmhouse to audit the dreams of Arabella ‘Bella’ Isadora (Penny Fuller), an eccentric but aging artist. Entering Bella’s vast VHS archive, which contains a lifetime of dreams, James stumbles on a secret that offers him a chance at love – and hope for escape. Full of atmosphere, style and eye-popping imagery, Strawberry Mansion translates an absurdist premise into a surprisingly tender and poignant portrayal of romance in an imagined near-future world.
