Summer of Soul
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Summer of Soul, dir. Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson, USA 2021, 117 min., English

Ahmir ‘Questlove’ Thompson’s acclaimed debut is a powerful and transporting work of non-fiction: part music film and part historical record, cetnred on an epic but little-known 1969 event celebrating Black history, culture and fashion.

The Harlem Cultural Festival unfolded in New York’s Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park) over six weeks between June and August 1969: the so-called Summer of Love. Featuring the likes of Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone and Mahalia Jackson, the event was filmed but the footage was forgotten – until now. A testament to both the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and the healing power of music during times of unrest, this thrilling feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Wonder, Simone, Jackson, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, BB King, The 5th Dimension and many more.
