In a suit, Lydia Tár waves a baton at an orchestra offscreen, eyes closed in rapture
Tár, dir. Todd Field, USA 2022, 158 min., English & German with English subtitles, 15

A pioneering conductor faces a devastating reckoning in Todd Field’s epic feature – highlighted by a landmark performance in the title role by Cate Blanchett.

Lydia Tár (Blanchett) is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest musicians: a triple-threat pianist, composer and conductor, and the first female Principal Conductor of the storied Berlin Philharmonic. With a book launch soon to be followed by a much-anticipated recording of Mahler’s Fifth, Tár is at the peak of her powers and the height of her fame. But within a few weeks, several of her key relationships begin to crumble – and her life unravels with them. With excellent support from the likes of Noémie Merlant, Nina Hoss and Mark Strong, Blanchett is magnetic as a woman on the edge in Field’s first feature since 2006’s Little Children.
