The Banshees of Inisherin, dir. Martin McDonagh, United Kingdom / Ireland / USA 2022, 114 min., English, 15

The In Bruges trio of Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Martin McDonagh reunite for another gloriously pitch-black comedy – the well-deserved winner of Best Actor and Best Screenplay awards at this year’s Venice International Film Festival.

A remote island off the west coast of Ireland, a century ago. Pádraic (Farrell) and Colm (Gleeson) are lifelong friends – or, at least, they were. When Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship, a stunned Pádraic endeavours to repair their relationship, helped by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan). But Pádraic's repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve – and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events escalate in swift and shocking fashion. The latest from writer-director McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) is another captivating feature – thanks in no small part to outstanding performances from Gleeson and Farrell.
