Elderly widower Rasul (played here by the late Ezzatollah Entezami, Iran’s most famous actor) lives alone on his prosperous tomato farm. When a young woman (magnificently played by Fatemeh Motamed-Arya) comes to work at the farm to support her family, a relationship develops with Rasul. This feature by Rakhshan Bani-Etemad, one of the most talented filmmakers of post-revolutionary Iran, is a beautifully observed story, in her social-realist style, about the constraints of social convention, and the barriers to marriage presented by class and age. Here we see three of the finest talents in Iranian cinema working together.
