Winner of the Golden Eye for Best Documentary at the Cannes Film Festival 2019, Patricio Guzmán’s powerfully personal feature completes his magnificent trilogy exploring the relationship between historical memory, political trauma and geography in his native Chile.
Like its predecessors, The Cordillera of Dreams is inspired by the coup that deposed Chilean President Salvador Allende in 1973 and put in place Auguste Pinochet’s 17-year dictatorship. But here, Guzmán turns not to the skies (as in Nostalgia for the Light) or the water (as with The Pearl Button) but to the iconic Andes, setting out on a journey through this extraordinary cordillera that serves to reconstruct Chile’s history while attempting to unearth lost memories. The film also pays potent tribute to cameraman Pablo Salas, who remained in Chile after the Pinochet coup to film protest and oppression.
