The Future Tense, dirs. Christine Molly & Joe Lawlor, Ireland / UK 2022, 89 min., English

‘In different places, different thoughts emerge.’ Molloy and Lawlor have spent three decades in England, raising their now nearly-adult daughter Molly, and putting down creative and personal roots. They consider whether it’s now time to make a move back to Ireland, in a thoughtful essay-style film full of humour.

So begins The Future Tense, the latest documentary from Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, and the follow-up to their acclaimed Further Beyond (2016). With a focus on identity, memory and the thorny issue of nationalism, at its heart this film circles the filmmakers’ relationship to Ireland, and their adopted home of England. Through reflections on personal and social history, The Future Tense explores the osmosis between England and Ireland, at this most critical and politically charged of moments.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor, hosted by filmmaker and curator Gareth Evans.
