The Giver Gives to Give
+ Live performance by Poppy Jean Crawford
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Giver Gives to Give, dirs. Angela Riccardi & Silken Weinberg 2023, 19 min., silent

Multi-disciplinary artists Angela Ricciardi and Silken Weinberg’s The Giver Gives to Give, shot on 16mm black and white, follows a lonesome clown in search of means, understanding and unconditional love who joins the circus only to find themself more lost than ever. Astonishing and bizarre, Ricciardi and Weinberg’s work blends wistful aesthetics and a touching storyline with a pervading irreverent undertone.

The Giver Gives to Give is followed by a live acoustic performance by artist and musician Poppy Jean Crawford, who also plays the main character of the clown in the film.

Event duration: 70 min.
Angela Ricciardi is a multi-disciplinary artist, photographer and filmmaker. Inspired by the chemical reactions and manual processes of analog media, her experimental moving image works and photographs explore surrealist landscapes of the psyche, with narrative being at the core. Combining meticulous intentionality with divine accidents, she ultimately seeks to reveal aspects of her subjects - and herself - that lie hidden beneath the surface. Her practice is thus quintessentially relational, driven by her interest in storytelling that drives the personal to reverie. This idea of archiving and marking existence, as well as exploring pre-existing archives, is of great interest to Angela’s image-making practice - a subject she endeavors to pursue in future projects. Currently residing between Los Angeles and London, she has collaborated with many influential artists and clients across music, fashion and film.

Los Angeles bred 25-year-old Poppy Jean Crawford has been making music and performing since she was a child. Her musical journey began in preschool, belting out Britney Spears atop bustling Mexican restaurant tables in Hollywood and the makeshift stage of her grandmother’s fireplace. From an early age, she had vivid dreams of commanding sold-out arenas with her original songs, waking to wrestle those elusive melodies into existence. Throughout her teens, she dedicated herself to crafting songs from the fragments of her dreams. At 16, she dropped out of high school to work on her first recordings with legendary producer Ross Robinson (Korn, Slipknot, Limp Bizkit) in Venice Beach, California, alongside a supergroup of musicians – Justin Pearson (The Locust), Michael Craine (Retox), and Dave Lombardo (Slayer). These recordings were shelved for many years. During the intervening period, Poppy released four singles and three EPs, including the "JEANJEANIE” E.P. (2020), released on Danger Mouse’s label, 30th Century Records and ‘The Takeover’ E.P. (2023) made in collaboration with producer James Dring (Blur, Gorillaz, Lana Del Rey). She has also toured with a variety of bands including Placebo, The Black Lips, Starcrawler, L.A. Witch, Blood Red Shoes, and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. After years of dedication and hard work, Poppy Jean Crawford is set to finally release those first recordings on Angel Olsen’s new label imprint somethingscosmic. Now, she commands more refined stages, embodying a rock 'n' roll Judy Garland draped in ethereal, unyielding glamour. Her music, more fireworks than flowers, possesses a dark and dreamy presence that captivates and enchants. Her music tells the story better than anyone ever could. At a time when it’s all too easy to go viral and then vanish, Crawford is making the kind of music that foreshadows a long, ever-evolving career.
