The Grief of Others

The Grief of Others, dir. Patrick Wang, USA 2015, 103 min., English

A cinematic poet of small-town America, Patrick Wang’s second feature has much in common with his first, In the Family – not least its excellent leading man, Trevor St John. And yet this compelling film, based on Leah Hager Cohen’s novel, is very much its own story: a tale of loss, grief, betrayal and the struggles to move forward and find a new path through life.

John and Ricky Ryrie (Trevor St John and Wendy Moniz) try to return to their previous lives following the death of their baby just 57 hours after his birth. There’s no going back to the way things were, as their tragic loss reshapes everything they hoped to build for themselves and their two older children. But when a visitor unexpectedly arrives, they find themselves growing more alert to the hurt, warmth and burdens of others – and to the grief that’s part of every human life.
