The Guard from Underground
地獄の警備員
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A blank-faced train guard in uniform stares past the camera, half his face in shadows
The Guard from Underground (地獄の警備員), dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Japan 1992, 93 min., Japanese with English subtitles

Art historian Akiko starts her new job at a big corporation the same day as a mysterious security guard, who she recognizes as a former sumo wrestling serial killer.

A prominent voice of contemporary Japanese cinema, Kiyoshi Kurosawa directed The Guard from Underground before his better-known contributions to the horror genre such as Cure (キュア) and Pulse (回路). This early work meticulously blends homage to American slasher movies and social commentary on the corporate world. It will be presented for the first time in the UK in a brand new restoration.
