The Outsiders: The Complete Novel
Institute of Contemporary Arts
The Outsiders, dir. Francis Ford Coppola, USA 1983, 111 min., English, 12A

It’s the mid 1960s, and tender-hearted teenager Ponyboy (C Thomas Howell) enjoys hanging out with his brothers Darry (Patrick Swayze) and Soda (Rob Lowe) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But when a scuffle with his friend Johnny (Ralph Macchio) inadvertently leads to the death of a rival gang member (Leif Garrett), the pair go into hiding to avoid arrest – and before long, Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas (Matt Dillon) and their Greaser buddies have to face up to the consequences of their violent lives.

Based on the 1967 bestseller by SE Hinton, herself just a teenager when the book was published, The Outsiders launched the careers of many members of the so-called Brat Pack upon its original 1983 release. Director Francis Ford Coppola has supervised this new 4K restoration, which will look and sound better than ever in the ICA’s recently upgraded Cinema.
