The Power of the Dog, dir. Jane Campion, Australia / Canada / New Zealand / UK / USA 2021, 125 min., English, 12A

Adapted from Thomas Savage’s classic western novel about two warring brothers in rural Montana, director Jane Campion’s first film since 2009’s Brave won her the Silver Lion award for Best Director at the 2021 Venice International Film Festival.

Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch) is a charismatic rancher who inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother George (Jesse Plemons) meets, courts and marries Rose (Kirsten Dunst), a widow with a teenage son, Phil torments and intimidates the pair until a hidden secret comes unexpectedly to light. Blessed with brilliant performances from a standout cast, Campion’s long-awaited return is a singularly gripping psychodrama – and definitely best experienced on the big screen.
