ICA is closed from the 30 May – 3 June inclusive.
A century after The Kid made his name around the world, directors James Spinney and Peter Middleton (Notes on Blindness) find new perspectives on one of cinema’s most famous and fabled figures. Using an innovative and captivating blend of newly unearthed audio recordings, dramatic reconstructions and personal archives, The Real Charlie Chaplin sheds new light on the many sides of a ground-breaking, controversial and visionary artist.
An upbringing amid the slums of Victorian London, a meteoric rise to the heights of global superstardom, a fall from commercial grace amid a fierce scandal – Charlie Chaplin’s life is, appropriately, the stuff of Hollywood legend. Through a kaleidoscope of previously unheard voices, Spinney and Middleton journey deep into Chaplin’s public and private lives, painting a rich and insightful portrait of one of the 20th century’s greatest artists.
