The Right to Earth (online)
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Free Land Camp (ATL – Acampamento Terra Livre), dir. Edgar Kanaykõ Xakriabá, Brazil 2017, 7 min., Portuguese & Kayapó with English subtitles

A programme of short works about different forms of Indigenous struggle – symbolic, practical, political, mythological – for the right to land.
Originally screened as part of Brazil Indigenous Film Festival 2021
Programme

Equilibrium (Equilíbrio)
dir. Yawar Muniz Wanderley, Brazil 2020, 11 min., Portuguese with English subtitles
Kaapora, an Indigenous spiritual entity, opens a critical discussion of our civilization’s destructive relationship with our planet in this short manifesto – a warning to humanity from the spirit of the forests. Equilibrium was one of 15 Indigenous productions supported by Another Sky, a project run by several Brazilian universities in partnership with the University of Sussex and funded by the British Academy.

The Celebration of Spirits (A Festa Dos Encantados)
dir. Masanori Ohashy, Brazil 2016, 15 min., Portuguese with English subtitles
This animated work narrates the saga of an Indigenous Guajajara man who, searching for his lost brother, finds a subterranean world inhabited by enchanted beings who teach him the rituals and songs of their many celebrations.

Zawxiperkwer Ka’a – Guardians of the Forest (Guardiões da Floresta)
dir. Jocy & Milson Guajajara, Brazil 2018,  51 min., Portuguese with English subtitles
This thought-provoking work documents the activities of the Guardians of the Forest, a group formed by Indigenous people to protect their own territory of the Caru Indigenous Lands. Since 2012, the group has been fighting against illegal logging and working to protect the Awá-Guajá, one of the most threatened isolated Indigenous groups on the eastern coast of the Amazon.

Free Land Camp (ATL – Acampamento Terra Livre)
dir. Edgar Kanaykõ Xakriabá, Brazil 2017, 7 min., Portuguese & Kayapó with English subtitles
Edgar Kanaykõ Xakriabá’s observational documentary invites the audience to witness one of the most important acts of Indigenous resistance: a massive annual demonstration in Brasilia, organised by the Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB), in which Indigenous people from across Brazil demand the restoration of rights that they have been systematically denied.
