When filmmaker and author Mark Cousins is faced with surgery to repair and restore his failing eyesight, he begins to deeply consider the role that looking plays in his life – and what life might be like without it.
The Story of Looking is a typically far-reaching film essay: a provocative journey through the power of the image that’s very much of a piece with Cousins’ previous work (The Story of Film, The Eyes of Orson Welles) but altogether more intimate and personal. Roaming from Ray Charles to Satyajit Ray, Derek Jarman to Jenny Agutter, the city to the country, Cousins is the perfect guide to the riches of all we can see before us – sharing the pleasure and pain of seeing the world in all its complexity and contradictions with eyes wide open.
