Seven years after Mad Max: Fury Road, director George Miller (Mad Max, The Witches of Eastwick, Babe) returns with a film that couldn’t be much more different in style and scope – a rich, colourful and visually dazzling Arabian Nights-type story starring two of contemporary cinema’s most charismatic actors, Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton.
Dr Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton), a leading academic, is in Istanbul for a conference when she purchases an antique bottle from a local market. But when she brings it back to her hotel room, out pops a djinn (Idris Elba). Claiming to have been trapped inside the bottle for 3,000 years, the djinn offers Alithea three wishes in exchange for his freedom, but Alithea isn’t convinced that he’s real – and she knows all too well the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. Charming performances from both leads highlight Miller’s sumptuous and surprising fantasy.
