Winner of the special 75th Anniversary Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the latest feature from Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Rosetta, The Kid with a Bike) is a deeply compassionate story of two young migrants fighting to overturn impossible odds and build themselves a new life in Europe.
Lokita (Joely Mbundu) is a 16-year-old girl from Cameroon. Tori (Pablo Schils), five years younger, hails from Benin. The pair have made the treacherous journey from West Africa to Europe, meeting on the boat north and then travelling together in search of a better life. But when Belgian immigration officials don’t buy Lokita’s story that she’s Tori’s elder sister, her chance of obtaining residency papers – and with people-traffickers to pay off, the duo have to turn to the black market to survive. Outstanding performances from both leads help the Dardennes to bring real moral clarity to this timely and necessary feature.
