Viola, dir. Matías Piñeiro, Argentina 2012, 65 min., Spanish with English subtitles
Imbued with an atmosphere of playful confusion, Viola engages effortlessly with the beauty of Shakespeare’s language whilst maintaining Piñeiro’s penchant for serpentine camera movements and elliptical narratives. Blending melodrama and comedy to delightful effect, Piñeiro’s third feature unfurls with a captivating musicality that imbues this tale of the mysteries and realities of love with an atmosphere of lightness and grace.
The Princess of France, dir. Matías Piñeiro, Argentina 2014, 67 min., Spanish with English subtitles
In Matias Piñeiro’s third Shakespearean variation, a young man returns to Buenos Aires to reconquer the life he was forced to abandon, namely his theatre company and a radio-play production of Love’s Labour’s Lost.
Tapping into the spirit of Shakespeare’s most linguistically dense text, Piñeiro blends liberating temporal digressions with exquisitely choreographed long takes to create another dazzlingly expressive exploration of intimacy. Featuring stunning performances from Piñeiro’s regular ensemble of actors, The Princess of France is a deft romantic comedy brimming with languid eroticism and unmoored desire.
