What Do We See When We Look At The Sky?,  dir. Alexandre Koberidze,  Georgia / Germany 2021, 150 min., Georgian with English subtitles, U

A would-be couple find their plans for love thwarted by a strange but overpowering curse in writer-director Aleksandre Koberidze’s delightful romance.

In the Georgian riverside city of Kutaisi, summertime romance and World Cup fever are in the air. A pair of chance encounters bring together pharmacist Lisa (Oliko Barbakadze) and soccer player Giorgi (Giorgi Ambroladze), who make plans for a date the next night. But the next day, they both awake transformed by a mysterious curse – unrecognisable from the day before (now played by Ani Karseladze and Giorgi Bochorishvili). How can this fated couple ever find one another again? Glowing cinematography and convincing performances highlight this beautiful piece of magical-realist filmmaking.
