Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy (Gūzen to sōzō), dir. Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, Japan 2021, 121 min., Japanese with English subtitles, 15

Three distinct tales of love, desire and chance are united by director Ryusuke Hamaguchi in this delightful triptych, which won the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2021 – and which was completed by Hamaguchi in tandem with the award-winning Drive My Car which continues screening at the ICA.

A young woman is astonished to learn that the new object of her best friend’s affections appears to be her own ex-boyfriend. A failing student sets a honeytrap for his professor, whose failure to trigger it has unforeseen consequences. A woman endures a dispiriting high-school reunion, only to later bump into the one former classmate she wanted to see. The characters at the heart of these three stories are unrelated and unacquainted – but in Hamaguchi’s hands, the stories combine into a telling exploration into the complexities of relationships, told through coincidences that happen to women in love.
