Women Talking
Institute of Contemporary Arts
A group of women in a community sit amongst wooden crates and haystacks, looking offscreen in worry. A single person stands staring at the camera, a solid face.
Women Talking, dir. Sarah Polley, USA 2022, 104 min, English, 15

Victims of sexual abuse by the men of their isolated colony in the American countryside, a group of women, members of the Mennonite community, meet in closed hearing to take action. Stay and fight, or leave. They will not do nothing.

Inspired by events which took place in the Mennonite community in Bolivia between 2005 and 2009 and based on the eponymous book by Miriam Toews, Women Talking follows the women's sinuous argument and winding path to collective action. The staging in closed hearing, accompanied by powerful performances by Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley and Frances McDormand among others, invites us viewers to a mental experiment initiated at the beginning of the film in those terms: "What follows is an act of female imagination.”
