In 19th-century Macedonia, an ancient spirit known as the wolf-eatress kidnaps Nevena, a 16-year-old girl who has lived in almost total isolation, transforming her into an immortal witch able to inhabit the physical form of anyone she chooses. Equipped with new powers she has yet to understand, Nevena ventures out into the world on a voyage of self-discovery.
Breathtakingly bold in its artistic ambition, Goran Stolevski’s lyrical exploration of the human condition is almost impossible to describe; imagine, if you will, Terrence Malick remaking The Witch, based on a treatment by Angela Carter, and you might come close to picturing the grim delights that lie in store. But in truth, Stolevski’s bracing blend of arthouse intellectualism and free-flowing gore is a rare and utterly unique work of art.
