Join us for the London launch of Pina issue #3, featuring a conversation between American Artist and Lola Olufemi, moderated by Pina’s editor-curator Catalina Imizcoz.
Pina, founded in 2024, is a printed, portable exhibition space. It functions as a commissioning platform, collaborating with artists to create exhibitions existing solely within 60 pages of the magazine. Each exhibition is accompanied by a conversation between the artist and a notable thinker, and a newly commissioned short story.
In issue #3, American Artist presents ‘Power Grid’, accompanied by a fiction piece by Lola Olufemi. ‘Power Grid’ is an immersive mapping of contemporary sociocultural experience along X-Y axes intersecting poverty, wealth, captivity and freedom. It lays bare a matrix of disparities inherent to life under late-stage racial and extractive capitalism: from ‘being in love’, situated between poverty and freedom; to ‘political asylum seeking’ at the extreme of poverty and captivity; and ‘recreational space travel’ as the ultimate manifestation of wealth and freedom.
Artist and Olufemi will be in conversation about the pairing of their exhibition and story, discussing the potential of the printed page to reimagine the exhibition itself – and how, where and why it exists.

Bios
American Artist is a New York City-based practitioner. Starting with their legal name change in 2013, Artist’s work addresses the history of race, technology and knowledge production through experiments in sculpture, design and video. Their exhibition in Pina is their first UK solo presentation.
American Artist makes thought experiments about technology, race, and knowledge production, beginning with their legal name change in 2013. Their artwork primarily takes the form of sculpture, and video. Artist is a grant recipient of Creative Capital, Artadia, and Trellis Art Fund and is an alumni of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. They have held solo exhibitions at MIT List Center, Queens Museum, REDCAT and Pioneer Works (all US). They have also participated in exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem (US), the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago (US), Kunsthalle Basel (CH) and Nam June Paik Art Center, Seoul (SK).
Lola Olufemi is a black feminist writer and researcher from London. She is a lecturer in Fine Art Critical Studies at Goldsmiths University. Her work focuses on the utility of the political imagination in the textual and visual cultures of radical social movements, examining the role cultural production plays in materialist resistance and collective conceptualisations of futurity. She is author of Feminism Interrupted: Disrupting Power (Pluto Press, 2020), Experiments in Imagining Otherwise (Hajar Press, 2021), the forthcoming Against Literature (Peninsula Press, 2026) and a member of 'bare minimum', an interdisciplinary anti-work arts collective. She occasionally curates and is a member of the organising team at the Feminist Library based in Peckham.
Catalina Imizcoz is an editor and researcher from Buenos Aires, with a PhD in exhibition design and an editorial-curatorial practice as founder of Pina magazine.

Please note that the lift is small (see measurements in our Visual Story Guide) and cannot accommodate motorised wheelchairs; a transfer to a standard chair is required.
