Intimacies + introduction

Two Japanese men sit, thinking deeply about theatre
Intimacies, dir. Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Japan 2012, Japanese, 255 min.

Students at a theatre school in Japan put on a performance of the play Shinmitsua. Presented in three parts combining elements of fiction and documentary, performance and truth. Observational techniques detail the pitfalls and tensions that arise during the production in part one. Then, in part two the play is shown in its entirety. The film closes with an epilogue.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s first exploration of long duration was conceived while teaching at ENBU Seminar, a film and theatre school in Tokyo, as a graduation project for
his students. Poetry and the written word are thematic centres. Language as a tool, translating into different modes of expression; film, theatre and art.

This screening will be introduced by season curator Sam Smith with an original essay by Iana Murray.
