Arab Stories in Film: From Idea to Audience
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Mariner of the Mountains, dir. Karim Aïnouz, Brazil / France / Germany 2021, 98 min., Portuguese, Arabic, Tamazight and French with English subtitles

How do Arab filmmakers shape up their original stories to become fully-fledged films? What processes accompany them as they develop their ideas? What role do film curators and programmers play in highlighting certain stories? And how instrumental are cinemas and venues for the circulation of Arab films?

In this panel discussion, filmmaker Saeed Taji Farouki will address this year’s SAFAR’s theme by looking at storytelling in today’s Arab independent cinema, from its writing process to its presentation to the wider audiences.

With filmmakers Darin J. Sallam (Farha), Sara Mesfer and Hind Alfahhad (Becoming), cinema director Butheina Kazim (Cinema Akil) and more.
