Join art critic and historian Élisabeth Lebovici for the The International Association of Art Critics UK (AICA) lecture held in collaboration with ICA. Established to promote the practice and discipline of art criticism, AICA is an international organisation made up of thousands of art critics, writers, curators and scholars.
Lebovici’s history with art criticism has been staggered and shattered by ‘total social facts’. These include the AIDS epidemic and the #MeToo movement, challenging her to use miscomprehension as a relational method.
She traces shifts in her practice that emerged out of writing the book Ce que le sida m’a fait (What AIDS Has Done to Me, 2021), seeing the exhibition Exposé-es (2023) at Palais du Tokyo curated in response to her book and from both teaching to being taught by art practitioners.
Challenging us to question set ideas and assumptions, Lebovici will draw on art historian Daniel Arasser’s notion of ‘not seeing anything,’ using it as a guide and timeline for the lecture.
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception in the ICA bar.
