Drawing on a vast family archive and using an elaborate mise-en-scène, director Mona Achache bravely unearths the troubled life and death of her mother, a photographer raised in a bohemian literary environment with few boundaries. The filmmaker skillfully employs the medium to make sense of a life, resulting in a fascinating and unconventional, yet emotionally rich, work that offers much to reflect upon.
